Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) are one of Florida’s most recognizable coastal birds, often seen gliding low over the water or diving dramatically for fish along the shoreline. Unlike many seabirds, brown pelicans hunt by plunge-diving—folding their wings back and dropping straight into the water to scoop up fish with their large throat pouch.

They were once endangered due to pesticide use, but conservation efforts helped their populations recover, making them one of Florida’s great wildlife comeback stories.

Brown pelicans have always held a special place in my heart because my grandma loved them. Seeing them perched on docks, flying in formation over the water, or patiently watching the shoreline always reminds me of time spent near the coast and the quiet appreciation she had for them. There’s something calm and familiar about pelicans to me now—like a connection to both Florida and memories I’ll always carry with me.
