Florida worm shells (Vermetidae) are one of the stranger and more fascinating shells found along Florida’s coastline. Unlike traditional spiral shells, they grow in irregular twisting shapes that look almost worm-like, attaching themselves permanently to rocks, reefs, docks, and other hard surfaces.

Even though they look unusual, worm shells are actually marine snails. Instead of moving around like most snails, they stay fixed in place and feed by releasing mucus nets into the water to catch tiny food particles drifting by with the current.

I’ve always loved finding them because they feel a little overlooked and unconventional—almost like nature decided to experiment with shape and texture. Their strange organic forms make them feel perfectly at home paired with stained glass and coastal-inspired designs.
